Tai'an gains the name because of Mount Tai, " great of Mount Tai all fits in the four seas ", resides the happy and peace meaning. Already there is the mankind that lived and multiplied around Mount Tai 50,000 years before, 4000- 600 years ago, the clan of both sides of Wen river created prosperous " Dawenkou Culture ".
Belong to blue and green state and Xuzhou respectively in Tai'an in Xia Shang, belonged to the Qi, Lu two stupid countries time of Zhou dynasty. Qin dynasty, belong to Jibei prefecture, Dong Prefecture, the Xue 's respectively within the border. Set up Mount Tai prefecture in 200 B.C. In 1925, the Northern Warlords set up Tai'an way, cancelled in 1928. 1936, domestic Tai'an, new Thai county subordinate to 12 administrative supervisor commissioner's office, Feicheng, Dongping, Ningyang subordinate to six, second, first administrative supervisor commissioner's office. In 1939, set up and resisted against Japan democratic regime, from November of the same year to March of next year, the administrative supervisor's prefectural commissioner's office of West, administrative supervisor's prefectural commissioner's office of Mount Tai were born in succession. In September of 1941, established the Thai administration of south district to unite the office, and then changed into a Thai administrative supervisor's prefectural commissioner's office of south district, cancelled in October of 1945. In May of 1950, Mount Tai, the West amalgamated and established the commissioner's office of Taian. Cancelled the commissioner's office of Tai'an in October of 1958, had jurisdiction over the county and belonged to Jinan respectively. Replied and put the commissioner's office of Tai'an in July of 1961. In 1967, established " revolutionary committee of Tai'an area " to substitute the commissioner's office. Cancelled" the revolutionary committee of Tai'an area " in July of 1978, established the administrative office of Taian area. In March of 1985, cancelled Tai'an area, original Tai'an at county level was promoted as the prefecture-level city, implement the system of county under the control of the municipality.
